Rose Marie Documentary 'Wait for Your Laugh' Gets November Release Date (Exclusive)
Vitagraph Films will begin rolling out Jason Wise's portrait of the comedian in New York City.
Rose Marie is heading back to the big screen.
Vitagraph Films has acquired the North American theatrical rights to Wait for Your Laugh, the documentary celebrating the dynamic life and achieved career of the seasoned comedian, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. It will open in New York City on Nov. 3, San Francisco on Nov. 10 and Los Angeles on Nov. 17, followed by select cities nationwide. Shot on 35mm and 16mm film stock, the film will be projected where possible as a 35mm print.
Director Jason Wise also produced the film with Christina Wise in association with Forgotten Man Films. It opened the Mill Valley Film Festival earlier this month.
Wait for Your Laugh traces how the comedian, actress and singer — now 94 years old — traversed through every facet of the entertainment industry, from her vaudeville roots at the age of 3 to her work in film and Broadway and, of course, on The Dick Van Dyke Show as Sally Rogers, a lady TV writer who held her own with the boys. The film features behind-the-scenes footage from the comedian's personal collection, chronicling what went on backstage on The Dick Van Dyke Show and other sets where she worked. The doc also digests the experience of being a female performer in the 20th century (including how her gigs were protected and nurtured by the mob, who knew her as "the kid"), and notes how she and her fellow nonagenarians Dick Van Dyke, Carl Reiner and Peter Marshall still have the drive to create.
The theatrical deal was negotiated with Vitagraph Films founder and president David Schultz with Brian Reshevsky on behalf of the filmmakers.
