Dark Star Picks Up Punk Rock Biopic ‘The Icarus Line Must Die’, Sets Theatrical Release
EXCLUSIVE: The Icarus Line, the infamous LA-based punk rock band fronted by Joe Cardamone, are heading to the silver screen after Dark Star Pictures picked up semi-biopic The Icarus Line Must Die.
The film, a dark dramatic narrative set against the backdrop of the current LA underground music scene, will be released theatrically in June 2018 with a July home entertainment release in the U.S.
It tells the story of Cardamone as he navigates his way through the ups and downs of the modern music landscape with a new album and a major label deal in sight, while trying to keep his band, his relationship and his life from falling apart.
The Icarus Line were notorious during the early 2000s, touring and tearing up the world with their brand of Birthday Party-style chaos. Picking fights with bands like the Strokes – Cardamone, a member of the Buddyhead collective once spray-painted ‘Sellouts Suckn Dicks’ on the side of their tourbus – and smashing up Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar at SXSW – the band lived fast.
The film is directed by newcomer Michael Grodner, best known for music videos, and he produced alongside Cardamone, Josh Crockett and Kristin Slaysman. It features cameos from the likes of Black Flag and Circle Jerks’ Keith Morris and Ariel Pink as well as an original soundtrack from Pink Mountaintops, Together Pangea, Retox, Obliterations and Annie Hardy of Giant Drag.
Dark Star Pictures is a new independent film distribution venture from former Breaking Glass Pictures exec Michael Repsch and The Icarus Line Must Die is its latest project following the launch of Thomas Middleditch comedy Entanglement, noir thriller Gutland, political fantasy drama All You Can Eat Buddha and the crime drama The Queen of Hollywood Blvd.
“We can’t wait to unleash The Icarus Line Must Die upon the masses” said writer and director Grodner. “We’re thrilled to partner with Dark Star Pictures on the release of our film.”
“The Icarus Line Must Die is an extremely unique film that taps into the core of the LA underground music scene, giving audiences an unrelenting look into that world,” added Repsch. “All the while structured around a compelling thriller narrative with a No Wave sensibility.”
